Econet Telecom Lesotho Launches Major Network Upgrade to Boost Digital Connectivity in Maseru

Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has embarked on a landmark project to upgrade the Maseru radio access network (RAN) and transport network, signaling a transformative leap in the country’s digital infrastructure. This ambitious initiative is set to enhance mobile and internet connectivity, delivering faster, more reliable digital services for consumers and businesses alike.
The initial phase of the upgrade, which kicked off in February 2025, has been successfully completed, laying the groundwork for the critical next stages. ETL confirmed that between May 20 and July 30, 2025, key milestones will be reached as the project advances through a carefully planned phased rollout. While minimal service interruptions may occur during this period, the company assures customers that every measure is in place to minimize disruptions and maintain seamless connectivity.
“This network transformation represents Econet’s unwavering commitment to building a smarter, faster, and more resilient digital future for Lesotho,” said Dennis Plaatjies, CEO of Econet Telecom Lesotho, in a recent press release. “We are not just upgrading equipment; we are empowering progress and strengthening the very foundation of digital connectivity in the Mountain Kingdom.”
The comprehensive upgrade involves replacing legacy radio systems with state-of-the-art, high-performance units across key locations in Maseru. Additionally, transport infrastructure—the critical backbone supporting data traffic—will be reinforced to handle growing demands for high-speed, reliable connectivity. This enhancement is essential to support the surge in data consumption and the growing reliance on mobile internet services.
According to Plaatjies, the project is designed with customer experience at its core. “We are taking all necessary precautions to avoid service disruptions and maintain business continuity for all users during the process,” he said.
Key Benefits of the Network Upgrade
- Enhanced Transport Infrastructure: Strengthening the network backbone ensures higher capacity and better data routing, supporting faster and more reliable internet connections.
- Expanded Core Network Capacity: Increased capacity enables smoother data flow and paves the way for advanced digital services nationwide.
- Improved 4G and 5G Radio Access Networks: Upgraded mobile network capabilities will reduce congestion, expand coverage, and improve the quality of both voice and data services on the latest 4G and 5G technologies.
The upgrade is being executed site-by-site throughout Maseru, allowing technicians to ensure stability and quality at each location before progressing. This phased approach balances rapid progress with quality assurance and minimal impact on everyday users.
“As we move forward, every customer, partner, and team member plays an essential role in realising this vision. Together, we are building a more connected Lesotho—one that’s ready for the future,” Plaatjies added.
This project forms a vital part of Econet’s broader digital transformation agenda. Rooted in innovation and a deep commitment to customer experience, these upgrades will future-proof Lesotho’s telecommunications infrastructure. By meeting the rising demand for high-speed internet and expanding digital service capabilities, Econet is positioning the country to compete on a global technological stage.
As Lesotho advances toward a more connected future, Econet Telecom Lesotho’s Maseru network upgrade stands as a significant milestone on the journey to national development and digital empowerment.
