Africa Day 2025: AU Calls for Justice, Unity, and Global Transformation

The African Union (AU) marked Africa Day 2025 with a powerful message of reflection and resolve, urging the continent and its diaspora to continue the pursuit of justice, unity, and shared progress. Commemorated annually on May 25, Africa Day celebrates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, now succeeded by the African Union.

This year’s theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” placed the spotlight on historical injustices stemming from slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism. The AU’s message called not only for acknowledgment of the past but for meaningful reparative actions to redress centuries of exploitation and oppression.

Speaking on behalf of the African Union Commission (AUC), His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AUC, delivered a stirring keynote address. He emphasized the urgency of securing reparative justice for Africa and its global descendants while focusing on the continent’s transformation and empowerment.

“While justice and reparations remain long overdue,” H.E. Youssouf said, “Africa will not be held hostage by the pain of its past.” He called on nations, institutions, and global partners to support a process rooted in truth, dignity, and restorative justice.

In his address, Youssouf also reflected on Africa’s resilience and progress despite facing persistent challenges. “Africa continues to sacrifice and strive towards freedom from conflict, underdevelopment, and war. The continent is steadily building a future of peace, prosperity, and integration,” he said.

He went on to highlight Africa’s immense strategic assets:

  • A youthful and rapidly growing population
  • Vast expanses of arable land
  • Rich reserves of minerals and natural resources
  • Exceptional potential for renewable energy development

With its population projected to exceed 2.5 billion by 2050, Africa is not just preparing for the future—it is shaping it. “Africa is the engine of global transformation,” the Chairperson stated, reinforcing the AU’s vision of the continent as a driver of innovation, sustainability, and equitable development.

Africa Day 2025 comes at a time when calls for reparations and justice are gaining momentum globally. From international dialogues to legal frameworks and policy proposals, African leaders and advocates are intensifying efforts to address historical wrongs while building stronger partnerships with the diaspora.

In closing, the African Union underscored its commitment to deepening continental integration, enhancing regional cooperation, and ensuring that Africa’s voice remains strong on the world stage.

As the AU continues to advocate for justice and equity, Africa Day 2025 serves as a reminder that the continent’s strength lies in its unity, heritage, and unyielding spirit to rise above adversity toward a future defined by dignity and shared prosperity.
