Vodacom Lesotho Raises Concerns Over Starlink’s Potential Entry into the Market

Following the announcement by the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) regarding a request by the international network company Starlink to operate in Lesotho, local telecommunications provider Vodacom Lesotho has voiced concerns about the matter.
Speaking in an interview, the Executive Head of Regulatory and External Affairs at Vodacom Lesotho, Mr. Ts’epo Ntaopane, stated that the company has no objection to Starlink’s operation in Lesotho, provided that it adheres to the country’s data regulation policies. He emphasized that it is crucial for the international company to comply with local laws to ensure that Lesotho’s data remains secure and is not exposed to external entities.
Mr. Ntaopane further noted that the introduction of a new player in the telecommunications sector could enhance competition, potentially benefiting consumers with better connectivity and services. However, he stressed that regulatory compliance is key in safeguarding the nation’s data sovereignty and maintaining fair market practices.
The LCA has yet to confirm whether Starlink’s request has been approved or if further deliberations will take place. Meanwhile, industry stakeholders continue to monitor the developments closely, as the potential entry of Starlink could significantly impact the telecommunications landscape in Lesotho.
