Snowfall Blankets Mahlasela as Authorities Urge Caution Amid Hazardous Weather

Following earlier predictions from the Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) regarding snowfall in the highland regions, the Northern and Eastern highlands of the country woke up to snow-covered landscapes on Thursday morning, with Mahlasela being one of the areas most visibly affected.
According to LMS forecasts, snowfall was expected in Botha-Bothe, Thaba-Tseka, and Mokhotlong, and the predictions proved accurate as a white blanket covered the mountainous areas, signaling the arrival of the winter season in full force.
Speaking to the agency, the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Mahlape Koali, urged members of the public to avoid non-essential travel to the highlands during this period of adverse weather. She warned that snow-covered roads are slippery and pose a significant danger to motorists.
“We are appealing to the public to refrain from taking long trips to the highland districts during this hazardous weather. Snow makes the roads extremely slippery, and traveling under such conditions increases the risk of accidents,” said Mrs. Koali.
While there have been no reports of life-threatening incidents so far, the DMA has confirmed that measures are in place to ensure road safety. These include the application of salt to snow-laden roads to reduce slipperiness and facilitate smoother vehicle movement through affected areas.
Mrs. Koali further encouraged the public to stay indoors and remain attentive to weather updates through radio, television, and other forms of mass media. Staying informed, she emphasized, is key to personal safety and effective disaster response.
As Lesotho experiences its first significant snowfall of the season, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with the priority being the safety of residents and motorists in the highland districts.
