Lesotho Football Referees Begin Mandatory Fitness Tests

The Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) has commenced its mandatory physical fitness tests for elite referees at two key locations: Bambatha Ts’ita Sports Arena in Maseru and the Maputsoe District Football Association (DIFA) Ground. According to LeFA Communications and Media Manager, Mr. Mikia Kalati, the tests, which began on Sunday, April 6, 2025, are part of the association’s ongoing effort to ensure the highest standards of officiating in Lesotho’s football leagues.

A total of 80 match officials are expected to participate in the fitness evaluations, which are crucial for maintaining the physical capabilities required to officiate in top-tier football matches. The fitness tests are designed to assess the referees’ endurance, speed, and agility—qualities that are essential for maintaining control and fairness during fast-paced matches.

Kalati highlighted the importance of these tests, noting that referees who fail to meet the physical requirements will face demotion to lower divisions. They will not be eligible to officiate in elite matches until they undergo another round of testing and pass. This policy is part of LeFA’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and quality of officiating at all levels of the sport.

The fitness tests are an integral part of LeFA’s broader efforts to enhance the professionalism of football in Lesotho. By ensuring that referees are physically fit, the association aims to improve the overall quality of officiating, reduce errors on the field, and foster fair play. The tests also emphasize LeFA’s commitment to investing in the development of its match officials, who play a critical role in the success and reputation of Lesotho football.

As the tests continue, the focus will remain on ensuring that the country’s referees meet the required fitness standards to handle the demands of competitive football. With these efforts, LeFA aims to uphold its high standards for officiating and contribute to the continued growth and development of the sport in Lesotho.
