The Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services (LBTS) has made an urgent appeal to the public to donate blood in preparation for the Easter holidays, as the blood bank is running dangerously low on supplies.
In an interview with the Agency, LBTS Principal Laboratory Technologist, Mr. Khotso Kalake, expressed concern over the dwindling blood reserves. He revealed that only 60 units of blood were collected last week, a significantly low figure compared to the usual requirements. He suspected that the decline in donations was caused by the recent rainy weather, which may have discouraged potential donors from visiting collection centers.
“Currently, the situation is critical. There is only A positive blood available in the blood bank, with no reserves of A negative, B, O, or AB,” Mr. Kalake stated. He further highlighted that for blood group O, which is in high demand due to its universal donor compatibility, only two units are available, and these are strictly reserved for children.
With the Easter holidays approaching, the need for blood is expected to increase due to a possible rise in medical emergencies, including accidents and other health-related complications. Hospitals rely on a stable blood supply to perform life-saving procedures, and shortages can put patients at risk.
Mr. Kalake, therefore, urged all eligible donors, especially those with rare blood types, to come forward and donate as soon as possible. He emphasized that every donation has the potential to save lives and ensure that healthcare facilities can provide timely and effective treatment to those in need.
The LBTS continues to set up donation drives and encourages members of the public to visit designated centers to contribute to this life-saving cause.
