Al-Sam Farmers Combat Unemployment Through Pig Breeding and Pork Supply in Teyateyaneng

In an inspiring move to address unemployment and promote a sustainable livelihood, Al-Sam farmers in Teyateyaneng have turned to pig breeding and pork supply as a reliable source of income. Led by Mr. Appeal Samuel Rapapa, the farming initiative has grown from humble beginnings to a promising venture that contributes to both food security and economic development in Lesotho.

Speaking to the Agency on Tuesday, Mr. Rapapa shared his journey, which began in 2019 with just nine pigs and 100 chickens. From the onset, he recognized the potential in the market, particularly with the rising demand for organic eggs and quality pork. His foresight and determination have since helped him steadily expand the enterprise.

“My dream was to reach a point where I could slaughter at least two pigs at a time to meet the pork supply needs of local consumers,” Rapapa explained. He also emphasized how digital platforms and educational videos inspired him to refine his farming techniques and gain insights into the broader pork market, not only in Lesotho but also in neighboring countries.

The Al-Sam farming initiative stands as a beacon of youth-driven agriculture and entrepreneurship, showcasing how innovative farming practices can empower individuals and uplift communities. As demand for organic and locally sourced food continues to grow, ventures like Al-Sam are playing a crucial role in shaping a more self-reliant and prosperous future for Lesotho.
