Seven Thousand People Benefit from Clean Water After Hand Pump Maintenance in Metsi-Maholo

At least seven thousand people from four villages under the Metsi-Maholo Community Council are now accessing clean water following the completion of hand pump maintenance this month. The maintenance project, which began in early January and was completed by early February, has significantly improved water access for local residents.

In an interview with the Community Council’s Secretary, Ms. Palesa Mokotjo, she explained that the project was funded through an estimated M350,000 allocation from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police via the Development Fund. This fund is intended to support the implementation of developmental activities within district Community Councils where needs arise.

Ms. Mokotjo shared that many of the hand pumps had been out of service for several years due to a lack of maintenance funds. As a result, young females and women had to endure long, dangerous journeys to fetch water from unprotected springs. These springs not only posed significant health risks but also put women and girls at risk of assault or sexual abuse.

The successful completion of this project has brought relief to the communities, providing them with safer, more reliable access to clean water and improving overall public health and safety. This initiative highlights the importance of continued investment in infrastructure to enhance the well-being of rural populations.
