National University of Lesotho Celebrates 80 Years of Academic Excellence

The year 2025 marks 80 years since the establishment of the National University of Lesotho (NUL), the first and oldest university in Lesotho and Africa. Founded on April 8, 1945, as the Catholic University College in Roma by the Catholic Hierarchy of Southern Africa, NUL has played a significant role in higher education, research, and national development.

On Tuesday, NUL Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Fajana, in the presence of university management, student representatives, senior staff, and both academic and non-academic employees, officially launched the anniversary celebrations. The main event is set to take place on April 8, 2025, marking eight decades of scholarly achievements and contribution to society.

In his address, Professor Fajana emphasized the importance of this milestone, describing it as a celebration of “eight decades of academic excellence, innovation, and dedication to the development of Lesotho and beyond.” He acknowledged the university’s impact in shaping leaders, advancing research, and fostering intellectual growth within the country and the African continent.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, various activities and events will be held to honor the university’s legacy, recognize past and present contributions, and envision the institution’s future in the ever-evolving educational landscape.

NUL remains a pillar of higher education in Lesotho, and this anniversary marks not just a reflection on the past but also a commitment to continued academic excellence and innovation in the years ahead.
