The founder of the Annual Moshoeshoe Walk, Mr. Thabo Maretlane, has emphasized the need for Basotho to actively participate in promoting tourism and narrating their own history. Speaking at a press briefing in Maseru on Tuesday, Mr. Maretlane highlighted the importance of local involvement in showcasing the country’s rich heritage to attract visitors.
He explained that the three-day walk is more than just an event—it is a journey that retraces the history of the Basotho nation. He urged citizens to take responsibility for telling their own stories, whether through narration or actions that contribute to Lesotho’s tourism sector.
“As custodians of the tourism sector, we want to see Basotho leading in telling their history,” Mr. Maretlane stated. “This can be done through storytelling or through deeds that make Lesotho an attractive destination for visitors.”
Mr. Maretlane further emphasized that the Moshoeshoe Walk is dedicated to celebrating culture and heritage. He encouraged everyone to participate in keeping the tradition alive and making a meaningful impact.
The walk, which follows the footsteps of King Moshoeshoe I, will begin on March 6 from Menkhoaneng to Lipetu. On March 7, participants will proceed from Litepu to Malimong, and the final stretch on March 8 will take them from Malimong to Thaba-Bosiu. The journey will conclude with speeches and an official welcome at the historic site.
The Annual Moshoeshoe Walk continues to serve as a significant cultural event that not only honors the legacy of the nation’s founder but also strengthens Lesotho’s position as a destination rich in history and tradition.
