Disaster Management Authority Holds Handover Ceremony for Reconstructed Houses in Maseru

On Thursday, the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) celebrated a significant milestone with the handover ceremony of 26 newly reconstructed houses in Maseru district. These homes, which were severely damaged by strong winds and heavy rainfall, were rebuilt to provide affected families with safe and secure shelter. The ceremony took place at Qeme Fika le Mohala, with community members and officials coming together to mark this important occasion.
Mr. Reatile Elias, the manager of DMA, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the purpose of the event: to rejoice with the people whose lives had been disrupted by the devastating weather conditions. He noted that the reconstruction efforts were part of the government’s broader initiative to provide immediate support and relief to families in need. The reconstruction work was funded by last year’s budget, allowing DMA to rebuild 200 houses across the region, with 26 of these homes situated in various constituencies within Maseru, including Matsieng, Maseru Central, Mabote, and Makhaleng.
Mr. Elias highlighted that this effort represents the government’s commitment to disaster management and ensuring that those who suffer from extreme weather events are not left behind. The houses that were rebuilt are designed to provide greater resilience against future storms, incorporating better materials and construction practices to withstand the elements.
The event was not only a celebration of restored homes but also a reminder of the importance of preparedness and response in the face of climate-related disasters. As the DMA continues to work toward improving the living conditions of affected communities, the success of the project in Maseru is a clear testament to the effectiveness of coordinated disaster management efforts.
The recipients of the reconstructed houses expressed their gratitude for the support, and the ceremony offered a moment of hope and relief for those who had endured difficult times due to the destructive weather conditions. The DMA’s ongoing work in disaster recovery and reconstruction remains a crucial part of building resilience within vulnerable communities across Lesotho.
