China Donates 810 Tons of Rice and Wheat to Lesotho in Continued Support

The People’s Republic of China on Monday handed over a consignment of 810 tons of rice and wheat, valued at M25 million, to the government of Lesotho. The official handover event took place in Maseru, reinforcing the strong diplomatic and developmental ties between the two nations.

The handover certificates were signed by China’s Ambassador to Lesotho, Yang Xiaokun, alongside Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane. The ceremony was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau, Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Thabang Lekhela, Disaster Management Authority (DMA) Chief Executive, Mr. Reatile Elias, and other government officials.

In his remarks, Ambassador Yang emphasized that the food assistance forms part of a broader support package from China to Lesotho. He described the donation as a reflection of the enduring friendship and mutual support between the two countries.

“This emergency food assistance demonstrates China’s commitment to keeping its promises and honoring its words in providing China Aid. China always upholds the principles of sincerity, real results, amity, and good faith in developing friendly ties with Africa,” he said.

Ambassador Yang further highlighted that food security remains a key focus of China’s cooperation with African nations, including Lesotho. He reaffirmed China’s dedication to supporting Lesotho in eradicating hunger and strengthening food security.

“Since 2016, except for the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese government has provided food assistance to the government of Lesotho every year. China remains willing to continue offering support within its capacity to address the urgent needs of the local people,” he added.

The latest donation is expected to alleviate food shortages in the country and assist vulnerable communities. The Lesotho government expressed gratitude for China’s continued support, underscoring the importance of such partnerships in addressing food security challenges.
