Botha Bothe Wool and Mohair Growers Association Hosts Farmers’ Show to Assess Quality and Competitiveness

The Botha Bothe Wool and Mohair Growers Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, recently hosted a farmers’ show aimed at evaluating the efforts of local farmers in maintaining high-quality wool and mohair production for the market. The event provided a platform for farmers to showcase their efforts in ensuring that their wool and mohair remain competitive in both local and international markets.

Chairperson of the association, Mr. Nts’oebe Sankoela, explained that the primary goal of the show was to assess whether farmers are adequately feeding and caring for their animals, while also preserving the quality of their wool and mohair. This initiative also served to gauge how well the farmers are preparing their animals to compete in the international arena.

Mr. Sankoela expressed optimism about the upcoming national show, noting that, unlike previous years, he had observed significant improvements in the quality of wool and mohair production. “This year, when we go to the national show, we hope to secure first or second position because, unlike last year, I have seen that farmers have worked very hard to improve their wool and mohair production,” he said. “If our wool and mohair are competing internationally, it means our farmers are making great efforts to take care of their animals and ploughing their fields to ensure they have enough feed, even during droughts.”

The event also recognized outstanding achievements in wool production. The overall winner in the wool category, Mr. Tumahole Lerafa from Motete Wool and Mohair Shearing Shed, was honored for his dedication to the industry. Mr. Lerafa, a seasoned farmer, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing his long-standing commitment to animal farming. He credited his success to the consistent and attentive care he provides to his competition animals, ensuring they are always in optimal condition. “I keep my animals close to me to ensure they receive the best care at all times,” he said.

This event highlights the commitment of Botha Bothe farmers to continuously improve their wool and mohair production, with a clear focus on quality and sustainability. The efforts of the Botha Bothe Wool and Mohair Growers Association, alongside the Ministry of Agriculture, are setting a positive example for the agricultural sector in Lesotho.
