World Vision Lesotho Launches Emergency Response to Address Food Insecurity Amid El Niño Drought

In response to the declaration of food insecurity by the Prime Minister due to the ongoing El Niño-induced drought, World Vision Lesotho has launched an emergency intervention to provide vital food assistance to vulnerable households. This initiative, which started in January 2025, targets five districts in the country and aims to alleviate the effects of the food crisis over the next three months.

During an interview with the Lesotho News Agency, World Vision’s Communications and Marketing Manager, Ms. Lerato Brown, highlighted the urgency of the situation and the organization’s commitment to offering timely support. “We appreciate the collaboration with local stakeholders and community members in ensuring that the response is fair and effective,” Ms. Brown said. The intervention is designed to reach those most in need, ensuring that the food distribution process is transparent and reaches vulnerable groups.

The emergency response is focused on providing food assistance to 306 households across the districts of Maseru, Mafeteng, Mokhotlong, Leribe, and Berea. These areas have been severely impacted by the drought, leaving many families facing hunger and malnutrition. Through this initiative, World Vision Lesotho is working to mitigate the immediate impacts of the food crisis and offer a lifeline to households struggling to meet their basic food needs.

World Vision’s quick action in response to the drought highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between humanitarian organizations, local authorities, and community members in addressing food insecurity. The emergency response is expected to provide crucial relief to affected families during this challenging time, ensuring they have access to the sustenance necessary for their well-being.
