The Role of Broadcast Media in Strengthening Democracy

Broadcast media has long been a pillar of democracy, playing an essential role in informing, educating, and entertaining the public. By delivering diverse programs and news coverage, media outlets help ensure that citizens remain engaged and well-informed about national and global affairs.
This sentiment was echoed by local writer and Faculty of Communication Lecturer at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT), Mr. Khotso Moabi. Speaking to the Agency following the presentation of the 2025/26 fiscal year budget, Moabi emphasized the significant contribution of broadcast media to democratic governance.
His remarks came after the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Retsélisitsoe Matlanyane, announced plans for the establishment of a Broadcasting Centre in the country. The initiative aims to enhance media infrastructure, ensuring wider access to information and improved dissemination of news and educational content.
Moabi commended this development, highlighting the importance of such advancements in a country that has been navigating its post-independence growth since 1966. He noted that investing in media infrastructure strengthens democratic values by fostering transparency, accountability, and public participation.
The role of the media in a democratic society extends beyond mere information delivery. It acts as a watchdog, holding leaders accountable while also providing a platform for diverse voices and perspectives. Through balanced reporting and investigative journalism, the media enables citizens to make informed decisions, thereby reinforcing democratic governance.
With the establishment of the Broadcasting Centre, the country takes a significant step toward enhancing media accessibility and quality. As Moabi suggests, such milestones are crucial in strengthening democracy and ensuring that media continues to serve as a bridge between the government and the people.
