NUL Plans Student Residences and Business Complex, Seeks Public-Private Partnerships for Funding
The National University of Lesotho (NUL) has long had plans to construct student residences and a business complex, but the lack of adequate funding has prevented these aspirations from becoming a reality. According to the university’s Director of Communications and Marketing, Mrs. ‘Mamosa Moteetee, while these projects have always been part of their vision, financial constraints have posed significant challenges.
To bring these plans to life, Mrs. Moteetee emphasized the importance of forming a Public Private Partnership (PPP). She called on potential partners who may be interested in collaborating with NUL to come forward and explore possibilities for a mutually beneficial arrangement. This approach is seen as the key to overcoming financial hurdles and moving forward with the much-needed infrastructure projects.
In related news, street vendors who have been operating along the university’s fence expressed interest in being integrated into the campus development. They proposed to NUL the construction of stalls within the campus, where they could operate under a structured system and pay a fee for the space. This suggestion underscores the vendors’ desire for a more formalized and secure setting for their businesses.
However, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the area around the university, the vendors have been given three months to vacate the road reserve area, specifically the stretch from St. Michael’s to Ha Mafefooane. This directive is part of broader plans to enhance the surroundings and better manage public spaces.
NUL’s call for PPPs reflects a growing trend in Lesotho to seek collaborative solutions to developmental challenges, ensuring that necessary infrastructure can be built despite financial limitations.
