Lesotho to Establish Tourism Economic Zone in Sehlabathebe, Creating 6000 Jobs

In a significant move to combat unemployment, the government of Lesotho is set to establish a new Tourism Economic Zone (TEZ) in Sehlabathebe, which is expected to create at least 6000 jobs. This initiative is part of the broader government strategy to leverage tourism as a key driver of economic development.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, the Ministry of Tourism Principal Secretary (PS), Mr. Pokello Mahlomola, emphasized the importance of this project in the country’s economic framework. His remarks followed the 2025/26 fiscal year budget presentation, in which the Minister of Finance outlined a new strategic approach to tourism-led economic growth.

Mr. Mahlomola highlighted that the TEZ would not only generate employment but also enhance infrastructure, attract investors, and bolster the local economy. “Sehlabathebe is a site of immense natural beauty and cultural significance, making it an ideal location for tourism expansion,” he stated.

The TEZ will encompass various tourism facilities, including eco-lodges, adventure tourism hubs, and hospitality training centers. These developments aim to attract both domestic and international visitors while providing sustainable employment opportunities for Basotho citizens.

With tourism being one of Lesotho’s untapped economic assets, the government sees this project as a cornerstone for fostering long-term economic resilience. The Ministry of Tourism remains optimistic that the TEZ initiative will play a crucial role in reducing unemployment while positioning Lesotho as a competitive tourism destination in the region.
