Lesotho and Ethiopia to Explore Cooperation in Aviation

The Kingdom of Lesotho (KoL) and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) are engaged in discussions regarding a potential Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA). Once finalized and signed by both governments, this agreement is expected to unlock numerous opportunities, including enhanced trade, economic growth in Lesotho’s aviation sector, improved mobility, skills transfer, and job creation.

Lesotho’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Ntšiuoa Sekete, confirmed this development following her meeting with the Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), Mr. Getachew Mengistie, and representatives from Ethiopian Airlines on 24 January 2025 in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and a globally recognized air freight operator, has played a pivotal role in aviation for 78 years. The airline excels in technological advancement, leadership, network expansion, and aviation mentoring. With an extensive air connectivity network linking Addis Ababa to various global destinations, Ethiopian Airlines serves 141 international passenger and cargo routes, including 66 African cities, ensuring efficient travel with minimal layover time.

Ambassador Sekete emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Lesotho government’s mandate to revitalize the aviation sector, a commitment outlined to the Basotho Nation ahead of the October 2022 national elections. The ongoing negotiations stem from the broader General Bilateral Cooperation Agreement signed between Lesotho and Ethiopia in June 2012, which covers various sectors, including aviation.

This potential collaboration is set to enhance Lesotho’s global connectivity, boost trade, and contribute significantly to the nation’s economic development.
