Farming Remains a Key Livelihood in Lesotho

Farming continues to be one of the most important sources of livelihood in many parts of Lesotho, providing both food and income for countless households. This was emphasized by Mr. Khabele Matlosa, a highly regarded farmer from Teya-Teyaneng.

Mr. Matlosa, who has been farming since 1990, shared that his passion for agriculture was inspired by his mother, who owned a poultry farm. Over the years, he has focused primarily on cultivating crops such as red cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, spinach, and broccoli. His dedication to farming has made him one of the leading agricultural producers in his area.

Despite his success, Matlosa pointed out that farmers continue to face significant challenges that hinder large-scale production. Issues such as limited access to modern farming equipment, unpredictable weather conditions, and the high cost of inputs remain major obstacles.

However, he remains optimistic about the future of farming in Lesotho, calling for increased support from both the government and private sector to help farmers improve their productivity. He believes that with the right investment in infrastructure and resources, local farmers can significantly contribute to food security and economic growth in the country.

As Lesotho continues to rely heavily on agriculture, dedicated farmers like Matlosa play a crucial role in ensuring that farming remains a sustainable and profitable venture for future generations.
