Delay in Inmate Escape Inquiry Report Causes Anxiety Among Stakeholders

The prolonged delay in the release of the report by the Commission of Inquiry into the escape of inmates continues to create uncertainty and anxiety among both inmates and the Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS).

The Crime Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration of Ex-Offenders Association (CRROA) Executive Director, Mr. Nkalimeng Mothobi, expressed concern over the delayed report, noting that the Commission had completed gathering evidence at the Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) in September last year.

“We were hoping the Commission would compile a report within three to four months, but that has not been the case,” Mothobi said in an interview. He emphasized that the delay has left many stakeholders in limbo, particularly those within the correctional system who are eager to understand the findings and recommendations of the inquiry.

The report is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the escape of inmates and provide solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, the prolonged silence has raised concerns about transparency and accountability within the justice system.

Meanwhile, correctional officers and inmates alike remain on edge, as the lack of clarity over security measures and potential reforms adds to the existing tension. The delay in the report’s release also raises questions about whether systemic issues within correctional facilities are being adequately addressed.

As the wait continues, stakeholders are urging authorities to expedite the release of the findings to restore confidence in the correctional system and ensure that necessary measures are put in place to enhance security and rehabilitation efforts.
