Despite ongoing efforts to brand livestock in Maseru District, various challenges continue to hinder the efficient delivery of these services. This was revealed by the Maseru District Livestock Registration Manager, Mrs. Nthoto Mosoeunyane, in an interview with the Agency.
According to Mrs. Mosoeunyane, one of the key challenges is the shortage of skilled personnel. She noted that while temporary staff play a significant role in livestock branding, many lack the necessary skills to mark large livestock properly. Currently, only five permanent skilled staff members are available in the district to handle both large and small stock, creating delays and inefficiencies in the process.
The issue of staffing constraints has raised concerns about the pace and effectiveness of branding, which is essential for livestock identification, theft prevention, and disease control. The reliance on untrained temporary workers limits the district’s ability to meet the growing demand for branding services.
Mrs. Mosoeunyane emphasized the need for more skilled personnel and capacity-building initiatives to enhance the efficiency of livestock branding in Maseru. Addressing these challenges would ensure that branding services are delivered effectively, benefiting farmers and strengthening livestock management in the district.
