Precious Garments Recruitment a Positive Step Towards Job Creation, Says IDUL Secretary General
The recent recruitment drive by Precious Garments has been hailed as a significant move towards job creation in Lesotho. Mr. Rathakane ‘Mei, the Secretary General of the Independent Democratic Union of Lesotho (IDUL), expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to reduce unemployment and improve the livelihoods of many Basotho.
Speaking on Monday following the recruitment process, Mr. ‘Mei acknowledged that although he did not have the exact number of workers hired, the initiative was a positive development. “This recruitment is a good move towards reducing unemployment in our country, and we appreciate that it will have a ripple effect on various sectors of the economy,” he said.
Mr. ‘Mei emphasized that the benefits of this recruitment extend beyond the workers themselves. He pointed out that unions like IDUL stand to gain with the addition of more members, while street vendors and landlords will also see positive impacts. With new jobs created, workers will have the means to support their families and contribute to the local economy.
However, Mr. ‘Mei also cautioned that this move should not be a repetition of past mistakes, referencing the case of Ace Apparel, where workers were re-employed only to be retrenched again later. He appealed to Precious Garments to ensure job security for the newly employed workers, urging that this should not be a temporary solution but a sustainable one.
“The workers’ stability is crucial. We do not want a situation where they are employed today and retrenched tomorrow,” Mr. ‘Mei said, calling for long-term job security and fair treatment for workers.
The recruitment by Precious Garments represents a promising step towards addressing unemployment and supporting the economy. It remains to be seen whether the company will ensure lasting job security for its new hires, but for now, the move is seen as a positive step towards economic growth and stability.
