National Dialogue on Disaster Management Emphasizes Preparedness and Effective Response
The effectiveness of disaster management and preparedness was the focal point of a two-day national dialogue hosted by the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) in Maseru. The event, held under the theme ‘Disaster Risk Reduction is Everybody’s Business’, brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for reducing risks, improving response efforts, and enhancing recovery from disasters, particularly those linked to climate change.
In his keynote address, Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane underscored the importance of comprehensive disaster management planning, which includes effective organization and the implementation of measures to reduce risks. He noted that the ability of a country to respond to and recover from disasters largely depends on the strength of its preparedness and response frameworks.
Prime Minister Matekane highlighted that natural disasters are increasingly becoming more frequent and severe, with many countries worldwide grappling with the impacts of climate change. He emphasized that Lesotho, like other nations, is vulnerable to the challenges posed by changing weather patterns, which exacerbate risks related to floods, droughts, and other natural calamities. “A number of countries across the globe have experienced disasters mostly due to climate change, and it is essential that we, too, adopt sustainable measures to address such challenges,” Matekane stated.
The Prime Minister called on all sectors of society to play an active role in disaster risk reduction, stressing that it is not only the responsibility of government institutions but also businesses, civil society, and individuals. He urged the creation of more inclusive disaster management systems that engage local communities and ensure that no one is left behind in times of crisis.
The dialogue also focused on sharing best practices in disaster management, strengthening early warning systems, and improving coordination among national and local authorities. Experts and representatives from various sectors provided insights into effective disaster risk reduction strategies, including the importance of climate adaptation and building resilient infrastructure.
The discussions highlighted the need for long-term investment in disaster preparedness, from educating the public to ensuring that resources are allocated to the most vulnerable areas. Participants emphasized the role of innovation and technology in enhancing disaster response, with digital platforms helping to improve communication and access to critical information during emergencies.
As the dialogue concluded, it was clear that effective disaster management is an ongoing process that requires collaboration, sustained effort, and a shared commitment to reducing the impacts of disasters on communities. The event provided a platform for reflection and action, with stakeholders leaving Maseru with renewed determination to work together to make disaster risk reduction a priority for all.
