Ministry Engages Berea Stakeholders on Land Mismanagement
In response to the growing concerns over land mismanagement in the country, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police held a one-day consultative meeting on Wednesday with Berea Heads of Departments (HODs) and Physical Planners. The meeting aimed to gather stakeholder input and discuss strategies to address the pressing issue of land misuse.
During the session, the Ministry emphasized the importance of the National Spatial Development Framework (NSDF) as a key tool to combat land mismanagement. The NSDF seeks to provide comprehensive guidance on physical development while promoting the creation of more resilient and sustainable cities and communities. Officials explained that the framework is designed to address current challenges in land use and ensure a more systematic approach to urban and rural planning.
“The misuse of land threatens not only the physical environment but also the economic and social stability of our communities. The NSDF is our blueprint for reversing these trends and fostering sustainable development,” a representative from the Ministry stated during the meeting.
The consultation also provided an opportunity for HODs and Physical Planners to share their perspectives on the issue, drawing attention to localized challenges in Berea. Some participants highlighted the lack of enforcement of existing land-use regulations and the rapid, unplanned urbanization that has led to the loss of arable land and environmental degradation. Others stressed the need for improved collaboration between stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of policies.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the recognition of the critical role of local authorities and planners in driving the objectives of the NSDF. The Ministry urged stakeholders to work together to enhance land governance and adopt innovative solutions to land-use challenges.
As land mismanagement continues to affect communities across the country, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with stakeholders at all levels. Consultations like the one held in Berea are part of broader efforts to ensure that the NSDF aligns with the needs of local communities while addressing national priorities.
The meeting marks an important step toward the realization of a well-managed and sustainable spatial development system that balances economic growth with environmental preservation. Stakeholders left the consultation with a shared understanding of the urgency to act and a renewed commitment to safeguarding the country’s land resources for future generations.
