Lesotho Strengthens Fight Against Malnutrition Through Coordinated National Strategy

On January 29, 2026, the Deputy Principal Secretary from the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Tseliso Lesenya, emphasized that addressing malnutrition in Lesotho is not limited to a single sector. Speaking at the validation workshop for the new Lesotho Food and Nutrition Strategy in Maseru, he described malnutrition as a development, economic, social and governance imperative. He highlighted that tackling the issue requires a holistic approach across multiple sectors of government and society.

Mr. Lesenya explained that malnutrition impacts health, agriculture, education, social protection, climate resilience and public finance. He stressed the need for strong coordination at the center of government and disciplined collaboration across ministries. He also called for meaningful partnerships with communities and development partners, warning that working in silos will not achieve desired results.

“It is my firm belief that under collective oversight and sustained implementation, Lesotho will no longer be defined by the distressing nutrition indicators reflected in the Lesotho Demographic and Health Survey 2023, 2024,” said Mr. Lesenya. He emphasized that coordinated action, evidence-based policy and global partnerships can reverse malnutrition within a generation.

Mr. Lesenya further highlighted the role of international partners, describing them not as external supporters but as core investors in the country’s human capital. He encouraged translating policy into tangible impact and turning commitment into measurable outcomes. The new strategy framework aims to ensure accountability, alignment and progress across all sectors.

The validation workshop marked a critical step in advancing Lesotho’s commitment to ending malnutrition. By fostering multi-sectoral coordination and leveraging both domestic and international resources, the government seeks to build a healthier, more productive population. The Lesotho Food and Nutrition Strategy sets clear targets to improve nutrition outcomes, strengthen resilience and create sustainable social and economic benefits for the country.
