Litenteng Community Stranded After Heavy Rains Wash Away Temporary Bridge
The Litenteng community in Roma has been left in despair after heavy rains over the past two days washed away their temporary bridge, further isolating villagers.
The access bridge, which connects Litenteng to nearby villages across the river, initially collapsed in December 2020 due to severe rainfall. In the absence of government intervention, residents constructed a temporary bridge using materials such as wooden poles, cement, and corrugated iron sheets. However, this makeshift structure has proven vulnerable to the region’s unpredictable weather.
Monday’s heavy rains destroyed the second temporary bridge built by the villagers after the first one collapsed during torrential downpours in December 2023. The repeated destruction of the bridge has left the community cut off from essential services and heightened the need for a permanent solution.
Residents have called on the government to prioritize the construction of a durable access bridge to prevent further disruptions. Without it, they face ongoing challenges in accessing schools, health facilities, and markets.
The recurring destruction of the temporary bridge underscores the urgent need for infrastructure investment to ensure the safety and mobility of the Litenteng community. For now, the villagers remain stranded, awaiting government action to provide a lasting solution to their plight.
