Lesotho Recognizes the Transformative Power of Artificial Intelligence for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

The government of Lesotho has expressed its commitment to harnessing the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help achieve the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This statement was made by the Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), Ms. Nthati Moorosi, during the official closing of a three-day validation workshop focused on the development of three critical policies—broadband and shared infrastructure, data management, and AI.

The workshop, which brought together experts, stakeholders, and policymakers, aimed to validate these policies and assess their alignment with Lesotho’s overarching development objectives, particularly those related to the SDGs. Minister Moorosi highlighted that these policies are integral to the country’s progress towards meeting the SDGs, as outlined in the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) II review extension.

In her closing remarks, Minister Moorosi emphasized the critical role of AI in driving economic growth and fostering innovation. She pointed out that AI has the potential to revolutionize various sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing, by improving efficiency, productivity, and service delivery. The government recognizes that AI can be a powerful tool in addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by Lesotho, such as poverty, unemployment, and limited access to quality services.

“The integration of AI technologies will not only boost our economy but also ensure that we remain competitive in the digital age. AI has the potential to unlock new opportunities and improve the quality of life for our people,” said Minister Moorosi.

The three policies discussed during the workshop are seen as vital pillars in creating a robust digital economy for Lesotho. The broadband policy, for example, seeks to ensure that all citizens have access to affordable and high-quality internet services, which are essential for participation in the digital economy. By improving internet access and service quality, the government aims to enhance communication, education, and business opportunities across the country.

The data management policy, on the other hand, focuses on ensuring the ethical use of data while safeguarding citizens’ privacy. With the increasing reliance on digital platforms, the government recognizes the importance of establishing frameworks for data governance that protect individuals’ rights while enabling the effective use of data for development purposes.

“The data policy will ensure that our citizens’ privacy is respected and that data is managed responsibly. Ethical data management is crucial as we move towards a more connected and data-driven society,” Minister Moorosi added.

The AI policy, which was a central focus of the workshop, aims to integrate AI technologies into various sectors of the economy, fostering innovation and supporting the achievement of the SDGs. The policy provides a framework for the responsible deployment of AI in Lesotho, ensuring that the technology is used to address local challenges, improve service delivery, and stimulate economic growth.

Minister Moorosi concluded by emphasizing that these policies are not only aligned with Lesotho’s national development agenda but are also in line with global efforts to promote digital inclusion and sustainable development. By leveraging AI, broadband, and data management technologies, Lesotho aims to accelerate its progress towards the SDGs and build a more resilient and prosperous future for its citizens.

“As we move forward, it is imperative that we continue to embrace innovation and ensure that our policies are inclusive, ethical, and supportive of our national development goals,” she said.

The validation workshop marked an important step in Lesotho’s journey towards becoming a leader in digital transformation in Africa. By implementing these policies, the country hopes to create a conducive environment for economic growth, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
