Lesotho Government Committed to Disaster Risk Reduction, Says Minister Lephema
Maseru, Lesotho – The government of Lesotho is steadfast in its commitment to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), according to the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, Mr. Lebona Lephema.
Speaking on the government’s long-term vision for disaster reduction, Minister Lephema highlighted key frameworks guiding Lesotho’s approach, including Regulations on Urban Preparedness, the National Strategic Development Plan II (NSDP), Agenda 2063, and Maseru 2050. These initiatives aim to foster sustainable development while ensuring the country is better equipped to mitigate disaster risks.
Mr. Lephema emphasized the government’s focus on two critical pillars: the Leasing Policy and the National Housing Policy 2018. Both policies, he noted, prioritize the construction of disaster-resilient housing as a key component of DRR efforts.
“The government, through my ministry, is fully committed to disaster risk reduction, particularly in ensuring that houses are constructed to withstand disasters,” Mr. Lephema stated. He added that proper planning plays a pivotal role in minimizing risks, pointing out that housing developments should be located in areas less prone to flooding.
The Minister called for collaborative interventions between the government and communities in housing development. He stressed that housing must meet specific standards to ensure resilience against disasters. “We need to emphasize disaster resilience through housing that highlights the importance of disaster preparedness,” he said.
Minister Lephema’s remarks reflect the government’s proactive stance in addressing disaster risks by integrating DRR principles into urban planning and housing policies. These measures are expected to not only enhance safety but also contribute to the country’s broader development goals.
As Lesotho continues to implement its vision for sustainable urban development, the emphasis on disaster-resilient housing and strategic planning underscores the government’s determination to create safer and more sustainable communities across the nation.
