Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services Faces Shortage After Christmas Surge
Despite Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services (LBTS) successfully supplying hospitals with sufficient blood during the Christmas holidays, the blood bank is currently running dry. The shortage has raised concerns, as some hospitals were unable to receive blood supplies last week.
In an interview with the Agency, LBTS Donor Recruiter Ms. Rethabile Ntlobo explained that the shortage has been particularly severe in O-positive blood. She attributed the depletion of the blood stock to a high demand, especially following the Christmas period, when several accidents were reported, and many patients required blood.
“Most of the blood collected before the Christmas holidays was used due to the high number of accidents and patient needs during that time,” Ms. Ntlobo said.
To address the growing shortage, LBTS plans to launch a nationwide campaign to encourage blood donations. The initiative will begin with the opening of donation clinics, starting in Teyateyaneng in Berea this week. These clinics aim to make it easier for people across the country to contribute to the vital blood supply.
The LBTS is calling on the public to donate blood and help replenish stocks, especially in light of the increasing demand for blood across the country.
