CPA Urges Basotho to Take Part in Producing Basic Needs Amid Rising Costs

The Consumer Protection Association (CPA) has called on consumers in Lesotho to become more involved in the production of basic needs such as food and clothing. This appeal was made by the CPA Chairperson, Mr. Khalema Khoabane, on Wednesday, following a reported six percent rise in maize meal prices by Lesotho Flour Mills.

Mr. Khoabane emphasized the urgency of local production, stating that now is a crucial time for Basotho to take control of their food and clothing supply chains. He highlighted the importance of growing crops, including vegetables, as a key strategy to enhance food security in the country. “This is a time for people to produce what they consume, ensuring that there is a reliable supply of essential goods,” he said.

The CPA Chairperson further advocated for the large-scale production of a variety of commodities. He explained that by producing in greater quantities, the country could reduce its dependency on imports, which have been affected by external factors such as climate change and the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. These factors have led to disruptions in global supply chains, further impacting food prices and availability.

Mr. Khoabane’s message underscores the importance of self-sufficiency in addressing the challenges facing Lesotho’s economy. By fostering local production, he believes the country can achieve sustainability in its food and clothing sectors, securing its future against unpredictable global events. The CPA’s call to action is a reminder for Basotho to take an active role in the future of their own livelihoods.
