Concerns Raised Over Slow Progress in Moshoeshoe I Airport Rehabilitation
The rehabilitation of the Moshoeshoe I International Airport appears to be moving at a slower pace than expected, despite the government’s payment of M7 million to the new contractor for design work. This was highlighted by Mr. Mokhothu Makhalanyane, the Parliamentary Chair of Chairs, during a tour of the airport with Parliamentary Committees Chairpersons and members on Tuesday.
Mr. Makhalanyane expressed concerns about the lack of visible progress on the ground, stating that while the government has already paid M7 million for the design work, the situation remains largely unchanged. During the visit, the delegation was informed that an additional certificate, requiring an extra M3 million, is needed before further work can proceed.
“We visited the airport with the objective of analyzing the rehabilitation progress as the government has already paid M7 million. However, we were told that another certificate, which requires an extra M3 million, has to be issued,” said Mr. Makhalanyane. He also emphasized that part of the purpose of the visit was to compare the progress of the new contractor’s work against that of the previous contractor.
The rehabilitation of Moshoeshoe I Airport is crucial for improving infrastructure and services at one of the country’s key international gateways. However, the slow pace of progress has raised questions about the efficiency and accountability of the ongoing work.
As the situation develops, stakeholders are eagerly awaiting more updates and clarification from the relevant authorities to ensure the timely and successful completion of the airport’s rehabilitation.
