Chiefs in Lesotho Receive Salary Increment as Motivation Amidst Ongoing Challenges

Despite facing numerous challenges in their daily operations, Chiefs across Lesotho are finding motivation in the salary increment set to be implemented in the next financial year. The announcement of this increase comes as a welcomed boost for the Chiefs, who continue to navigate a range of issues in their roles.

At a press conference held in Maseru on Friday, Chief Leloko Mohalenyane, Chairperson of the Chiefs’ Association, shared that while the Chiefs still face various difficulties in managing their offices, the upcoming salary increase is seen as a source of encouragement. “This increment is a motivation for us, despite the other challenges we face in the course of our duties,” said Chief Mohalenyane.

Among the major concerns still facing Chiefs, Mohalenyane emphasized the lack of proper office spaces. Currently, many Chiefs operate from their homes due to the absence of designated offices, which limits their ability to carry out their responsibilities effectively. Furthermore, he raised the issue of safety, explaining that Chiefs face potential danger in their day-to-day activities. To address this, they have been advocating for the provision of protective devices such as firearms, to ensure their safety as they go about their work.

The Chiefs’ call for better working conditions, including secure office spaces and safety equipment, highlights the need for further support and infrastructure to assist them in their roles. While the salary increment is a step in the right direction, it is clear that Chiefs require additional resources to function effectively and ensure their protection.

As Chiefs continue to play a vital role in governance and community leadership, their needs for proper facilities and safety measures remain a priority. The forthcoming salary increase, however, serves as a positive reminder of the importance of recognizing and supporting the critical work they do in their communities.
