Algerian Envoy Meets Lesotho’s Prime Minister to Seek Support for AU Deputy Chairperson Candidacy
On Wednesday, the Minister of Communications of Algeria, Mr. Mohammed Meziane, visited Lesotho as a special envoy for the President of the People’s Republic of Algeria. During his visit, he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane in Maseru to deliver a special message from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
According to Mr. Pitso Lesaoaona, Lesotho’s Minister of Gender, Youth, and Social Development, the purpose of Mr. Meziane’s visit was to seek Lesotho’s support for Ambassador Salma Mlika Haddadi, Algeria’s candidate for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The meeting underscored Algeria’s strategic outreach to gain backing for its candidate as elections for this significant position draw near.
In his remarks, Mr. Lesaoaona revealed that Prime Minister Matekane is currently reviewing the message and will provide a formal response at a later stage. While the Prime Minister’s decision is awaited, the meeting reflects the strong diplomatic ties between Algeria and Lesotho and their shared interest in the affairs of the African Union.
