Public Protests Against Tragic Death of Boitelo Motsoko
On Tuesday, members of the public took to the streets in a peaceful march to protest the brutal murder of five-year-old Boitelo Motsoko, who was raped and killed by a neighbor two weeks ago.
The march, organized by Willpowered Women Worldwide Lesotho, began at Matala Circle and proceeded to Ha Leqele in Maseru, stopping at the site where Boitelo’s body was found. It concluded at her home with a prayer session to honor her memory and demand justice.
Speaking on behalf of Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso, Mrs. Mathato Phafoli delivered an emotional address, urging Basotho citizens to embrace peace, love, and a revival of moral values. “It is heartbreaking that we, as a nation, seem to have become enemies to ourselves,” she said, lamenting the growing violence and lack of safety in the country.
Mrs. Phafoli also highlighted the stark reality faced by women in Lesotho. “Women are not free in their own land. They cannot walk freely at night, while men enjoy all the freedom in the world,” she remarked, emphasizing the urgent need to address gender-based violence and ensure a safer environment for all.
The tragic loss of Boitelo has sparked nationwide outrage, with many calling for stricter measures to combat violence against women and children. The march served not only as a demand for justice but also as a call to action for communities and authorities to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
Willpowered Women Worldwide Lesotho reiterated their commitment to advocating for women’s and children’s rights, urging policymakers to implement more stringent laws and policies to curb such heinous acts.
