Ministry of Natural Resources Holds Water Sector Coordination Forum in Maseru
The Ministry of Natural Resources hosted a one-day Water Sector Coordination Forum in Maseru on Wednesday, focusing on critical discussions surrounding the management of transboundary water resources. The forum, held under the theme ‘Transboundary Water Management – The Orange Senqu River Basin,’ was officially opened by the Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Mohlomi Moleko.
Commitment to Sustainable Water Management
In his opening remarks, Mr. Moleko emphasized the ministry’s unwavering commitment to ensuring sustainable water management practices and coordinating efforts toward achieving shared water resource management goals. He noted that water is one of the most valuable natural resources for Lesotho, making its preservation and effective management crucial to the country’s future.
“This meeting reaffirms our commitment to sustainable water management and highlights the importance of coordinated efforts to achieve shared objectives, as water is an essential resource for human survival and well-being,” said Mr. Moleko.
Global Perspective on Water Security
The minister also referenced the Global Water Partnership, which asserts that sustainable development cannot be achieved without securing water resources. According to the partnership, a water-secure world is one that balances the intrinsic value of water with its use for human survival. Mr. Moleko further emphasized that humanity has a responsibility to protect and manage water resources, ensuring they remain available to support future generations.
“This is a clear revelation of the responsibility we all share in caring for water so that it continues to support our survival and well-being,” he added.
Importance of Transboundary Water Management
The forum’s focus on the Orange Senqu River Basin highlighted the importance of collaborative water management across national borders. The Orange Senqu River Basin spans several countries, making it essential for neighboring nations to work together in managing and protecting its water resources. Effective transboundary management is critical to addressing challenges such as water scarcity, environmental degradation, and equitable access to water for all communities.
A Step Toward Cooperation
The discussions at the forum served as a platform for stakeholders from various sectors to come together, share insights, and strengthen their cooperation in managing water resources. Participants included government representatives, water management experts, environmental organizations, and other key stakeholders who are working toward a water-secure future for the region.
As Lesotho continues to navigate the complexities of water resource management, the forum reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, sustainable practices, and the shared responsibility of caring for one of the planet’s most essential resources.
