Radiation Protection Agency Hosts Stakeholder Sensitisation Workshop at Lancers Inn

The Radiation Protection Agency (RPA), under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, is hosting a Stakeholder Sensitisation Workshop at Lancers Inn. The event brings together partners to introduce the Agency, its mandate, and raise awareness about radiation risks and safety measures.

RPA CEO, Mqekela Khesa, provided an overview of the Agency, explaining that it was established under the Radiation Protection Act of 2018. The RPA ensures the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy, protects human health and the environment from harmful ionizing radiation, and secures radiation sources.

The workshop agenda includes:

  • An overview of the RPA and its mandate, presented by CEO Mqekela Khesa.
  • The authorisation process under the new regulatory framework, led by Ms. Relebohile Shokhoe.
  • Regulatory processes, including inspection and enforcement, presented by Mr. Mojalefa Sello.
  • Emergency arrangements for safety and security, led by RPA staff.
  • Group discussions, participant feedback, and planning of next steps.

Keynote remarks were delivered by Ms. Keketso Jobo (NLO), and the event was guided by the Director of Environment.

Mr. Khesa emphasised that RPA’s objectives include ensuring radiation sources are used only for beneficial and peaceful purposes, protecting human health and the environment from radiation hazards, regulating activities involving ionizing radiation, and managing licenses by issuing, amending, suspending, or revoking them as required.

The workshop aims to strengthen stakeholder engagement and promote safe practices in the use of radiation across Lesotho.
