Minister Limpho Tau Hands Over House Keys to Windstorm Victims in Berea
In response to the devastating windstorms that destroyed homes in Berea in 2023 and 2024, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau, took action by handing over house keys to 13 victims of the disaster. The event took place on Wednesday at Ha-Raphoolo, where the Minister presented the new homes to affected individuals from various parts of the Berea district.
In his remarks, Minister Tau highlighted the growing impact of climate change, which has brought about unpredictable weather patterns. He acknowledged that Lesotho is not immune to these changes, noting that the homes he was handing over were built in response to shifting weather conditions, which have caused a rise in heavy rains, droughts, floods, and windstorms. These extreme weather events have wreaked havoc on people’s homes, leaving many displaced and in need of urgent assistance.
Minister Tau emphasized the role of the government, particularly through the Disaster Management Authority (DMA), in addressing such calamities. The DMA is tasked with the crucial mandate of responding to disasters and helping communities build resilience against future occurrences. The house handover, according to the Minister, was a part of the government’s broader efforts to support those affected by natural disasters and provide them with a safer environment.
The government’s response underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and recovery, with Minister Tau reaffirming that the government remains committed to supporting vulnerable communities. The initiative not only offers immediate relief but also serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience-building in the face of climate-related challenges.
