DPE Launches Initiative to Strengthen Youth Involvement in Lesotho’s Decision-Making
Development for Peace Education (DPE) is embarking on an important mission to enhance the involvement of youth in Lesotho’s decision-making processes. The initiative began with a visit to the Sehlekehlekeng Youth Centre in the district, marking the start of a wider project to identify and support local youth associations. This will ensure they are equipped to actively participate in governance and policy implementation in the country.
In an interview with the Agency, DPE Education Researcher Mr. Lemohang Molibeli shared insights into the project, explaining that the visit was part of a two-year incubation period for the Youth Power Hub (YPH), a program supported by the European Union, UNICEF, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Mr. Molibeli emphasized that the initiative aims to empower young people across Lesotho, encouraging their active participation in governance processes. Although the program will cover all 10 districts of Lesotho, DPE is focusing its efforts on Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek, Quthing, and Qacha’s Nek.
The Youth Power Hub is designed to provide youth with the tools, resources, and support needed to play an influential role in shaping policies and decisions that directly affect their futures. By engaging with local youth associations, the initiative seeks to create platforms for young people to voice their concerns, propose solutions, and contribute to the country’s governance structures.
Through this project, DPE is not only aiming to foster democratic participation among the youth but also to ensure that their perspectives are taken into account in the formulation of policies that impact them.
