Basotho Action Party Leader Suspends Deputy, Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo
Basotho Action Party (BAP) Leader, Professor Nqosa Mahao, has suspended his deputy, Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo, following serious allegations of misconduct. In a formal suspension letter, Mahao cited Maqelepo’s failure to adequately address the charges against him and his disregard for the authority of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) and its Constitution.
Professor Mahao stated that despite giving Maqelepo the opportunity to explain himself, he had failed to offer a satisfactory response to the allegations. As a result, Mahao said that he had no choice but to proceed with the suspension, effective immediately, to ensure that the disciplinary process could unfold without interference.
The first allegation against Maqelepo involves his unauthorized communication with the Prime Minister of Lesotho. Mahao criticized Maqelepo for participating in drafting and sending a letter to the Prime Minister in collaboration with parties hostile to the BAP, a move that Mahao deemed a serious breach of party protocol.
The second allegation revolves around Maqelepo’s involvement in organizing or participating in a meeting of Berea District constituencies, which contravened Circular No: 004/2024 and defied a direct warning issued by the party’s Secretary General.
Mahao’s suspension of Maqelepo comes as part of efforts to uphold the integrity of the BAP and ensure that its operations remain aligned with its constitutional framework. The suspension allows the disciplinary process to proceed without any further disruption. As the situation develops, the BAP will continue to monitor the matter and take necessary steps to maintain order and unity within the party.
