Lesotho and Russia Celebrate 46 Years of Diplomatic Relations

The Kingdom of Lesotho joined the Embassy of the Russian Federation in commemorating Russian Diplomatic Worker’s Day, marking 46 years of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. The celebration highlighted decades of cooperation built on equality, mutual respect, and adherence to international law. The Russian Ambassador noted that the event aims to become a lasting tradition while pointing to growing Russia–Africa engagement through initiatives such as the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum and the summits held in Sochi in 2019 and Saint Petersburg in 2023. The gathering emphasized shared interests in strengthening ties across multiple sectors, reflecting a long-standing diplomatic partnership.
Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lejone Mpotjoana, reaffirmed Lesotho’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, education, science, and culture. He stressed the importance of diplomacy in promoting peace within an evolving multipolar world. Minister Mpotjoana also reiterated the call for reform of the United Nations Security Council to ensure permanent African representation. These remarks highlighted Lesotho’s vision for active participation in global governance while advocating for equitable representation for the continent.
Minister Mpotjoana announced Lesotho’s recent election to the African Union Peace and Security Council, emphasizing the country’s dedication to advancing peace and stability across Africa. Both Lesotho and Russia expressed a shared commitment to deepening relations based on mutual respect and friendship. The event underlined the value of sustained diplomatic dialogue, partnerships in trade and education, and cultural exchange programs. Continued collaboration is expected to expand opportunities for both countries while reinforcing the strategic importance of Africa–Russia relations. The celebration also served as a platform to explore future initiatives that strengthen political, economic, and social ties between Lesotho and Russia.
