Leribe Highlands Communities Sensitized on Climate Change and Weather Forecast
The Disaster Management Authority (DMA), through the District Disaster Management Team (DDMT) in Leribe, has embarked on a week-long sensitization programme aimed at addressing the effects of climate change and enhancing community reliance on weather forecasts. The programme, which commenced on Monday and is set to conclude on Friday, is supported by the Improving Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable and Food Insecure Populations in Lesotho (IACOV) initiative.
Purpose of the Sensitization Programme
At a public gathering held at Ha Palama, Mr. Molefi Phaqane, a member of the National Climate Change Committee, emphasized the dual purpose of the programme.
First, the initiative seeks to highlight the critical role of weather forecasts in daily decision-making, enabling individuals to plan and fulfill their responsibilities effectively. Communities are encouraged to incorporate weather information into their farming, transport, and other economic activities.
Second, the programme aims to educate communities about the long-term effects of climate change and provide guidance on how to adapt to these changes while maintaining productivity and improving living standards.
Building Climate Resilience in Leribe
The highlands of Leribe, like many parts of Lesotho, are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events. The sensitization programme addresses these challenges by equipping communities with knowledge and strategies to adapt. This includes promoting sustainable agricultural practices, efficient water use, and disaster preparedness.
Collaborative Effort
The programme’s success is attributed to the collaboration between the DMA, DDMT Leribe, and partners like IACOV. By prioritizing vulnerable populations, the initiative underscores the importance of community engagement and education in building resilience against climate-related challenges.
As the week progresses, the DMA and DDMT Leribe will continue visiting different areas in the highlands to ensure maximum reach and impact. By the end of the programme, it is hoped that communities will be better equipped to face the realities of climate change and utilize weather forecasts as a tool for resilience and improved livelihoods.
The sensitization programme is a vital step toward empowering communities to thrive in the face of adversity, ensuring that adaptation and preparedness become cornerstones of everyday life in Leribe.
