During her recent visit to Lesotho, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, accompanied by Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso and UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Amanda Khozi Mukwashi, toured the soon-to-be-launched Multi-Purpose Centre for Survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Maseru. This visit highlights the UN’s ongoing commitment to addressing GBV and supporting survivors in the region.

The Multi-Purpose Centre is designed to provide comprehensive support services to individuals affected by GBV. These services include psychosocial support, medical care, legal assistance, childhood development services, and livelihood skills training. By offering such a wide range of support, the centre aims to empower survivors and facilitate their reintegration into society.

During the visit, the Deputy Secretary-General and Queen ‘Masenate participated in a meaningful ceremony by planting a tree at the centre. This act served as a symbolic gesture of hope and renewal, representing new beginnings for survivors and creating a space for reflection, healing, and growth. The tree planting embodies the spirit of resilience and the importance of nurturing a supportive environment for those affected by GBV.

Ms. Amina J. Mohammed emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts in combating gender-based violence, underscoring that survivors should receive the support they need to rebuild their lives. The establishment of the Multi-Purpose Centre aligns with the UN’s global agenda to promote gender equality and empower women and girls, providing them with the tools and resources necessary to thrive.

The visit was met with optimism and enthusiasm, as local communities and stakeholders recognized the significance of the centre in addressing the pressing issue of GBV in Lesotho. It represents a commitment to ensuring that survivors are not only heard but also provided with the comprehensive support they deserve.

As the Multi-Purpose Centre prepares for its launch, it stands as a beacon of hope for survivors of GBV, fostering an environment where they can access essential services and support on their path to recovery and empowerment. The collaborative efforts of the UN, the local government, and community stakeholders will be crucial in ensuring the success of this vital initiative.
