National Dialogue on Sustainability of HIV and TB Response Kicks Off in Maseru
As global funding for HIV/AIDS initiatives continues to decline, the National AIDS Commission (NAC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has initiated a two-day National Dialogue in Maseru to develop a sustainability roadmap for the country’s HIV and tuberculosis (TB) response. The dialogue commenced on Monday and brings together various stakeholders to explore collective strategies to maintain and enhance the progress achieved in the fight against these diseases.
The primary objective of the dialogue is to assess the advancements Lesotho has made in ensuring a sustainable response to HIV and TB, particularly in the face of decreasing financial support. Stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare providers, and representatives from civil society organizations, are participating in discussions focused on identifying innovative solutions and strategies to safeguard the gains made in the fight against these epidemics.
During her address at the event, Ms. Pepukai Chikukwa, the Country Director of UNAIDS, emphasized the importance of this dialogue. She highlighted that reviewing the progress Lesotho has made towards sustainability is critical, especially given the challenges posed by reduced funding. “This dialogue serves as a platform for all stakeholders to come together and chart a course for the future,” she said. “We need to work collaboratively to ensure that the strides we have made in combating HIV and TB do not reverse.”
The discussions aim to focus on key areas such as resource mobilization, community engagement, and strengthening healthcare systems to support ongoing prevention, treatment, and care efforts. By fostering partnerships among government entities, non-governmental organizations, and international agencies, the dialogue seeks to cultivate a multi-faceted approach to sustain and enhance the country’s response to HIV and TB.
Lesotho, like many countries, has made significant progress in addressing the HIV epidemic, which has historically impacted its population. However, the decline in global funding poses a substantial threat to these advancements. The National Dialogue is a proactive step towards ensuring that Lesotho can continue to provide essential services and support to individuals living with HIV and TB.
The outcomes of this dialogue are expected to inform the development of a comprehensive sustainability roadmap, guiding the country’s future actions in combating these health challenges. By reinforcing commitment and collaboration among all stakeholders, Lesotho aims to secure a sustainable and effective response to HIV and TB, ultimately safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens.
