Lesotho Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Stateless Persons and Refugees

In a significant address at the 75th session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner Program (Excom), Mr. Lebona Lephema, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, reaffirmed Lesotho’s dedication to the United Nations (UN) and regional conventions aimed at eradicating statelessness and safeguarding the rights of refugees, stateless persons, and internally displaced individuals.

Minister Lephema highlighted the increasing urgency of these issues in a world beset by geopolitical tensions, rising migration flows, climate change, terrorism, and economic disruptions. He emphasized that stateless persons are particularly vulnerable, bearing the brunt of these global challenges. “In an era riddled with geo-political tensions, increased migration flows, climate change, terrorism, and economic disruptions, stateless persons are disproportionately affected,” he stated.

The minister’s remarks underscored the profound impact of statelessness, which can lead to exclusion from essential services, lack of legal recognition, and vulnerability to exploitation. Lephema acknowledged that these challenges are compounded by the global landscape, where the protection of human rights is more critical than ever. He reiterated Lesotho’s commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in international and regional frameworks aimed at protecting those without nationality.

By actively participating in discussions at Excom, Lesotho seeks to align its policies with global efforts to combat statelessness. The government aims to enhance cooperation with international organizations and other countries to develop sustainable solutions that address the root causes of statelessness and displacement.

Lephema’s address resonates with the ongoing need for collective action to address the plight of vulnerable populations. By reaffirming its commitment, Lesotho not only demonstrates its responsibility towards the global community but also highlights the importance of solidarity in tackling the challenges faced by stateless persons and refugees.

As the world grapples with these pressing issues, the commitment from Lesotho serves as a reminder of the essential role that nations play in fostering a more inclusive and equitable society, where the rights and dignity of every individual are respected and protected.
