Legislative Drafters Undergo Refresher Training in Maseru

Beginning today, Monday, a group of legislative drafters is participating in a four-week refresher training program in Maseru, aimed at enhancing their skills and knowledge. This training, organized by the Office of Parliamentary Council, is part of the European Union (EU) initiative titled “Support for the Reform and Strengthening of Governance in Lesotho Programme.”

In her opening address, Acting Principal Secretary (PS) Ms. Thato Masiloane emphasized the vital role of legislative drafters in a democratic society. She noted that, particularly during this pivotal period of reform and reconciliation in Lesotho, the expertise of these professionals is essential for crafting laws that reflect the needs and aspirations of the populace.

Ms. Masiloane underscored that well-drafted legislation is crucial for establishing a transparent and accountable governance framework. The ongoing reforms in the country necessitate that legislative drafters are well-equipped with contemporary drafting techniques and an understanding of best practices in legislative processes.

The training will cover various aspects of legislative drafting, including legal principles, effective communication, and the importance of stakeholder engagement in the law-making process. Participants will engage in interactive sessions, practical exercises, and discussions aimed at honing their drafting skills and ensuring they are prepared to meet the demands of their roles.

The EU’s support in facilitating this training underscores its commitment to strengthening governance and promoting democratic practices in Lesotho. By investing in the capacity-building of legislative drafters, the program aims to foster a legislative environment that is responsive to the needs of citizens and conducive to effective governance.

As the country embarks on a journey of reform, the skills and knowledge gained from this training will be instrumental in ensuring that the laws being drafted are not only effective but also reflective of the collective will of the people. The emphasis on reconciliation during this period further highlights the need for inclusivity and collaboration in the legislative process.

The training in Maseru is a significant step toward enhancing the capacity of legislative drafters, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to Lesotho’s democratic journey and governance framework. As these professionals work to refine their skills, the hope is that they will play a crucial role in shaping a more just and equitable society for all Basotho.
