On Friday, the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf (KCD) in Ha-Buasono, Berea, marked a significant milestone, celebrating 33 years since its establishment in 1991. Founded by Sister Babtistina Seeng Matsung, the school has grown to accommodate 58 children from Grade R to Grade Seven, providing essential education and support to the deaf community.
Named after a French benefactor who contributed to its establishment, the school’s Sesotho name, “Kananelo,” translates to “support” or “assistance,” reflecting its mission to uplift and empower children with hearing impairments. The institution currently employs five teachers funded through grants and three additional staff members, ensuring a comprehensive learning environment for its students.
In an interview, KCD Principal Sister Marriam Mosebo expressed her pride in the school’s achievements over the past three decades. “This milestone marks a lifetime achievement to be celebrated,” she stated. “We are grateful to God for guiding us through the challenges and successes we have encountered along the way.”
