Surrender For Illegal Guns In Lesotho Ends Today

Acting Police Boss Dr. Mahlape Morai has issued a final call for Basotho and all residents of Lesotho to surrender illegal firearms as the amnesty period concludes today. The campaign, titled “Silence of Guns in the Kingdom of Lesotho,” commenced on May 21 and is set to end on June 5. This initiative provides a critical opportunity for individuals to hand over illegal firearms, ammunition, and other unlawful weapons to the authorities without facing arrest or needing to reveal their identities.

Dr. Morai emphasized the importance of this campaign, noting that it is designed to help rid the nation of illegal weapons and ensure the safety and peace of its citizens. She reiterated that anyone who fails to surrender their illegal firearms by the end of today will face legal consequences. The amnesty also applies to ammunition and other unlawful weapons, which should be handed over at the nearest police station or to local Chiefs.

The campaign aligns with the broader “Silencing the Guns in Africa” agenda, a key initiative under the African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063. This initiative aims to end wars and conflicts, prevent genocide, and eliminate gender-based violence across the continent. Each September, AU member states commemorate “Silencing the Guns in Africa” month to reaffirm their commitment to these goals.

Dr. Morai urged the public to cooperate fully, not only by surrendering illegal weapons but also by reporting any knowledge of such firearms to the police. This collective effort is crucial for maintaining peace and security in Lesotho. The police chief highlighted that community involvement is essential in confiscating illegal weapons and ensuring that Lesotho remains a peaceful and safe country for all its residents.
