Mathibeli Mokhothu
Honourable Mathibeli Edwin Mokhothu was sworn-in as the Deputy Prime Minister in May 2020. He previously served as the official Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly from July 2017 to May 2020. He is also the Deputy Leader of the Democratic Congress (DC) political party.
Honourable Mokhothu has also served as Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation from March 2015 to June 2017 after being elected into the National Assembly in February 2015 to represent DC for the constituency of Qhoali No. 68 during the 2015 snap elections.
In 2011, Honourable Mokhothu obtained his Bachelor degree in Education from the National University of Lesotho. He also holds a Diploma in Education Secondary Certificate in HIV/AIDS. In 1993, he completed his primary school and high school in 1998.
As part of his continuing education, Honourable Mokhothu attended and participated in workshops and courses that include:
- HIV/AIDS Awareness and Life skills, Computer Awareness and Skills, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer.
- Leadership offered by LCE Administration and Bahai Faith Resource Persons in June 2004,
- Leadership offered by Development for Peace Education – DPE (NGO) in May 2004
- Leadership, Conflict Management and Resolutions offered by LCE Administration in April 2004,
- Leadership, Conflict Management and Resolutions offered by Development for Peace Education (DPE) and Directorate for Dispute Prevention and Resolutions (DDPR) in March 2003,
- Peace Building offered by Development for Peace Education (DPE) in 2001 and Legal Awareness offered by Transformation Resource Centre in 2001.
In 2012, Honourable Mokhothu was elected to the National Assembly representing DC for Constituency of Qhoali No. 68. He was again elected into the National Assembly to represent the same political party and constituency in February 2015. In July 2017, he became the official Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and this came as result of the country’s snap elections in June 2017 which resulted in the formation of the 3rd Coalition Government which was led by the leader of the All Basotho Convention (ABC) political party also former Prime Minister, Dr Motsoahae Thomas Thabane
Honourable Mokhothu spent seven years as a teacher. He served as a private teacher at St Sebastian High School from 1999 to 2001 and a full-time teacher at Mphaki High School from 2005 to 2008.
Honourable Mokhothu was born at Thaba-Chitja, Ha-Bohlokoa in Quthing. He is married. He likes sports as well as reading, especially leadership and conflict management books.
