Lesotho Launches Persons with Disabilities Advisory Council to Promote Inclusion

The Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development has launched the Persons with Disabilities Advisory Council in Maseru on Thursday, marking a key step toward advancing disability rights in Lesotho.

During the event, Deputy Principal Secretary Mr. Thae Makhetha explained that the council will monitor and evaluate the rights of persons with disabilities, advise the government and stakeholders, raise awareness, manage complaints, and support policy reforms. He emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive Lesotho where persons with disabilities can enjoy equal rights, full participation, and opportunities for independent living and personal development.

Minister of Gender, Youth and Social Development Mr. Pitso Lesaoana officially announced the council, highlighting its role in promoting, protecting, and monitoring the rights of persons with disabilities. He noted that the council’s work aligns with the Persons with Disability Equity Act of 2021 and Lesotho’s obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Mr. Lesaoana credited the establishment of the council to close collaboration among the government, development partners, civil society organizations, and the disability movement. He said the partnership has been critical in creating a platform that empowers persons with disabilities and strengthens the country’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

The launch of the Persons with Disabilities Advisory Council is a significant milestone for Lesotho, reinforcing government efforts to ensure that disability rights are recognized, protected, and integrated into national development policies. The council is expected to play a central role in shaping policies, addressing gaps in services, and promoting awareness that will improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities across the country.
