NULSSA gives back to the community
One of the 4 mandates of the National University of Lesotho is Community Engagement; the other 3 are Innovative Teaching and Learning, Quality Programmes as well as Appropriate Research. On the 12th July 2022, the National University of Lesotho Staff and Sports Association visited Popa Primary School, Ha Mama, Roma to give winter hats to 60 vulnerable primary school children in that
Since it is the usual event of the Association to engage in Community outreach, different beneficiaries are normally chosen without any preference but depending
on the focus of the Association at that time. It was at that juncture that the Association decided to extend a helping hand with winter hats since we are still in a cold weather. Engaging on the community outreaches is not only for social responsibility but also strengthening the relationship between the National University as well as the surrounding area within the NUL’s vicinity.
When speaking to the NULSSA Chairperson, Dr. Moeketsi Ntakatsane indicated that as a member of SAUSSA where they contribute towards the annual charity event organized by the hosting University, they (NULSSA) always feel and believe that charity must always start at home before it is done in other places.
“It was a memorable event especially looking at how happy the recipients were and how much the school appreciated our gesture. It is very heartbreaking to see how needy some of the Students were”, Dr. Ntakatsane said. After realizing how needy and vulnerable it is for many children at Popa Primary, Dr. Ntakatsane showed that they even had to make an unplanned pledge and zero anticipation of buying school shoes and uniform to at least 2 most vulnerable Students. “We therefore call
upon our colleagues with goodwill to join hands with us in this new venture”, Dr. Ntakatsane pledged.
One of the recipients stood up to heartily give a word of thanks and appreciation to the NULSSA team. Not only the recipients appreciated and thanked the good work done by NULSSA, also the teachers passed their words of gratitude. It was really heartwarming to the students at Popa Primary School and their teachers for the NULSSA gesture. What also made their hearts to smile more is that there is not even single member of NULSSA who has a kid in the school but have decided to help the school.
